✦ Synopsis

We develop a class of ®lters based upon the numerical solution of high-order elliptic problems in d which allow for independent determination of order and cut-o wave number and which default to classical Fourier-based ®lters in homogeneous domains. However, because they are based on the solution of a PDE, the present ®lters are not restricted to applications in tensor-product based geometries as is generally the case for Fourier-based ®lters. The discrete representation of the ®ltered output is constructed from a Krylov space generated in solving a well-conditioned system arising from a low-order PDE.

## Abstract This paper introduces the hybrid wavelet collocation–Brinkman penalization method for solving the Navier–Stokes equations in arbitrarily complex geometries. The main advantages of the wavelet collocation method and penalization techniques are described, and a brief summary of their impl

A cellular automata method for the prediction of incompressible fluid flows is presented and its practical relevance is investigated by comparing it with a standard finite volume solver. The cellular automata approach is based on an advanced lattice Boltzmann technique for a discrete microscopic des

A class of filters for large eddy simulations of turbulent inhomogeneous flows is presented. A general set of rules for constructing discrete filters in complex geometry is given and examples of such filters are presented. With these filters the commutation error between numerical differentiation an

A new simple solution technique is presented for fluid flow and heat convection problems that incorporate the similarity solution. Finite-difference methods and numerical integration are used to solve the describing equations using spreadsheets. Numerical solution by spreadsheets results in a soluti
