Criteria have been established for identifying fillers w h i c h are potentially highly reinforcing in silicone rubber from the way in w h i c h they influence the steadystate viscosity of silicone oils. The res'ults s h o w that acidic fillers, such as the widely used fumed silicas, can lead to significant amounts of scission in methyl silicone oils, and it is likely that the same reaction will occur during the vulcanization of silicone rubber.
