✦ Synopsis
The critical currents of high quality sintered YBCO tubes are measured in two configurations, namely (a) the self-field generated by the transport current is superimposed by an applied circular magnetic field generated by a current through a central wire, and (b) the self-field is superimposed by an applied longitudinal magnetic field. The results are compared to equivalent characteristics found for classicl superconductors (Pb and Pb-1%In tubes). This comparison makes it possible to distinguish clearly the regions in the YBCO critical current characteristics that are dominated by either weak link or weak flux pinning behaviour.
