VW, GM competing with home-grown efforts in China

Europe's biggest carmaker, Volkswagen, has agreed to develop fuel cell vehicles in China, according to a Bloomberg report. The company has signed an agreement with Tongji University and German engineering company IAV to produce a concept FCV, for which it will provide the body while Tongji will contribute fuel cells and high-power batteries.

Meanwhile, General Motors is cooperating with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) to build a hybrid bus for roadtesting in Shanghai. The agreement calls for GM and SAIC to co-develop a demonstration FCV, based on technology in GM's Hydro-Gen3, which is being trialled in Tokyo and Washington, DC. A two-year demonstration will begin in early 2005, according to Associated Press. China is stepping up efforts to develop FCVs ahead of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.

Meanwhile, China plans to test its first fuel cell bus on Beijing
