Abstract

An accelerometer based on the strain and bend characteristics of long period fiber grating (LPFG), which fabricated in common communication optical single mode fiber by using CO~2~ laser pulses, is investigated in this article. The relationship between vibration of the uniform strength beam and the light intensity of LPFG is analyzed. Experimental results show that the acceleration measuring system has a sensitivity of ∼2.82 v/g. The error between theoretical and experimental value is about 0.82%. Such kind of accelerometers have many advantages as low cost, a high sensitivity, can withstand temperatures up to 800°C, and achieve temperature self‐compensation. It would have great potential applications in measuring in real‐time and high temperature place. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
