Nos hallamos en el siglo XXII y parece que por fin la humanidad va a hacer realidad un viejo sueño: entablar relación con seres inteligentes de otros sistemas planetarios. Con todo, la tripulación de la nave que tiene encomendada la misión, pese a hallar muestras de técnica bastante avanzada, no obtiene la respuesta esperada. La reacción del hombre ante el fracaso y la dificultad inherente a todo intento de comunicación desempeñarán, al cabo, un papel esencial en la cadena de decisiones que lleva a un amargo desenlace no exento de ironía. En «Fiasco» se dan cita una vez más la preocupación por las dimensiones moral y filosófica del hombre, la pugna entre técnica y ética, el derroche de fantasía dotada de sólida base científica y el vigor narrativo de Stanislaw Lem.
