As the secretion of butyric acid was higher still than on the treatment with renderers fat, it is logical to assume that Megalac, too, has little negative effect on rumen fermentation. inhibit the de nouo synthesis of short and medium-chain fatty acids in the udder. This reduced synthesis is compensated for by the increased supply of long-chain fatty acids from the ration fat to the udder.

Our conclusions are: Soya bean oil has a negative effect on milk fat production. This is probably caused by two factors: disturbance of rumen fermentation leads to a lower production of acetic acid, while long-chain fatty acids, notably trans fatty acids, inhibit the synthesis of short and mediumchain fatty acids in the mammary tissue. Coconut and palm kernel oil have a disturbing effect on rumen fermentation, so that less substrate for milk fat synthesis is formed in the rumen. The higher supply of lauric and myristic acid can sometimes compensate for the lower secretion of the other medium chain fatty acids. Renderers fat and calcium salts from palmitic and oleic acid have little or no negative effect on rumen fermentation. The long-chain fatty acids of these fats do, however
