✦ Synopsis
nuclear democracy. The masses and coupling constants of all particles are determined by complicated nonlinear self-consistency or bootstrap equations.
The idea that everything will come out of the theory makes it as appealing as it is difficult to implement. Nonetheless, there is qualitative encouragement for S-matrix theorists in the work done to date both in the comparison of the theoretical ideas involved with experiment and in the results of approximate bootstrap calculations.
As a relatively new and vigorous assault on our ignorance of the nuclear world, the developments of S-matrix theory will be keenly followed by many physicists and will be participated in by still others in this growing field. Members of either of these groups will be pleased at the appearance of Chew's new book.
