✦ Synopsis
Most diverticula of the female urethra result from recurrent infection and obstruction of paraurethral ducts and glands or direct trauma from instrumentation. The diagnosis can be suggested when the vaginal examination reveals a tender base and anterior to the vagina with a fluiddebris level indicating a urethral diverticulum.
Case cystic swelling on the vaginal wall or when retained urine or purulent material is evacuated with digital pressure on the mass. However, it will be necessary, in almost all cases, to confirm it with diagnostic imaging. Transrectal sonography is one such method, being previously reported to assess this anomaly in a very few cases. We present two women with diverticula of the urethra confirmed at surgery. The use of transrectal sonography in diagnosis of this uncommon entity is stressed.
