Feeding Ecology of the Allochtlionous Feeder

Rn~borcc duniconius (HAMILTON) (Cyprinidae -Teleostei) keij ~rlortls: feeding ccology, allochthonoiis feeder, Rnsborn, dnniconius, entrophic tropic'il ponil, l n d i , ~

Seasonal fluctuations in the dietary components of Raabortc dtoriconius inhabiting 2% perennial eutrophic pond have been studied on the basis of analyses of tlie gut contents over 11 period of onc year from 1980 to 1981. Modified Points method was adopted for the quantit, ative estim*t,ion of the dietary items. Gut aiialysis revealed that the fish is predominantly an allochthonoiis feeder subsisting mainly on terrestrial Hymenoptera and Coleoptera. Flowers and seeds also formed part of the diet.ary composition of the fish. Allochthonous faiina were preferred at all the stages of t,he growth of the fish. Females have a greater preference for terrest.riit1 Coleoptere and tlie males for Formicidne. Tho feeding intmsities of three different length groiips and both sexes were also ascertained. This revealed that June, July, October and Noveniber are the most int, ensivc feeding periods of 11. daniconius. Older and mature fishes were foiind to be more active feeders t,liiin j iiveniles.
