amounted to SEK 289m (SEK 7.8 -US$1). Sales totaled SEK 2836m during the same period. Operating income in the third quarter was SEK 87m and sales SEK 908m.
The increase in automotive production, particularly in Italy, contributed to the rising sales shown by the Seals Division in western Europe. Demand for valve stem seals, which are delivered to all major automotive producers, remained strong. Demand from the manufacturers of agricultural and construction equipment also continued to grow.
During the third quarter, sales continued to rise in the North American market, despite the strike at a leading distribution company in the US which severely affected service levels to the after-market during August. Sales to automotive producers and to the automotive after-market in the US developed positively.
Group sales during the first nine months of 1997 amounted to SEK 27 584m, an increase of 9% compared with the corresponding period of 1996. Sales in the third quarter this year totalled SEK 8,837m.
