✦ Synopsis

Various defects, such as pressure wounds, scratches, pits caused by grinding, pits caused by corrosion, welding defects etc. may often exist on the surface of a structural member. Some components are designed with grooves and holes. Under the action of alternate load, a concentrated stress will occur at a defect, resulting in a fatigue crack. The fatigue life of a component is equal to the sum of leading fatigue crack life N i (the number of cycles) and the life Ne (the number of cycles) of the crack expanding to critical size. Generally speaking, Ni>Nf, therefore, it is important to research the formula observed by leading crack life Ni.

In this paper a new model for the prediction of the Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF) of fatigue life of structural elements during the crack propagation stage is described. This problem is considered as a cumulative damage process following the probabilistic approach of Bogdano! and Kozin [1]
