The phenotypic variability of mitochondrial disorders is remarkable and has been explained by the peculiarities of mitochondrial inheritance, although acquired factors may also have a role C9, 14). Mitochondrial dysfunction provides an attractive unifying explanation for the diverse clinical and laboratory features of MSL. The frequent association of MSL with alcoholism provides the clearest example, to date, of the interaction between acquired and genetic factors in this new and expanding family of metabolic diseases.
