✦ Synopsis
It is shown that a quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS), after some modifications in the ion source and in the detection and signal processing system, can be used for the mass analysis of very short pulses of neutrals or ions. The flexibility and sensitivity of such a modified QMS have been exploited in laser-molecular beam interactions.
It serves as an ideal tool to monitor the effectiveness of population transfer in a molecular multilevel system that includes at least one repulsive (dissociating) level.
