After the compilation of some general observations on the fort-nation and mobility of protonic charge carriers in solids and liquids, proton conductivity in CsHSO, and water is discussed in some detail. Proton conductivity is interpreted as a phenomenon between the solid and the liquid state characterized by the structural and dynamic disorder of a hydrogen bond 'network'. Structural and chemical criteria for the appearance of high proton conductivity are formulated.
