## Abstract A method is described for the preparation of a Porous Layer Open Tubular (PLOT) fused silica column coated with submicron particles of aluminum oxide for the analysis of light hydrocarbons. The column is thermally stable and provides reproducible analytical data over a long period of ti

โฆ Synopsis
Relatively long lengths of porous-layer open-tubular (PLOT) columns operated at high carrier gas velocities
were used to separate light hydrocarbons and permanent gases in less than 60 s. Two types of stationary phases were used in this study: silica particles and a commercially available carbon molecular sieve (Carboxen). A high-speed gas sample injection system actuated with an electronic timer allowed sample injection in as fast as 40 ms. The Carboxen PLOT column showed excellent selectivity for permanent gases, whereas the silica PLOT column demonstrated good separations of light hydrocarbons within 30 s. PLOT columns offer a good compromise between open tubular columns and packed columns for field analysis of volatile compounds when rapid speed is desired.
