A model for cross relaxation in high symmetry systems is developed. The positions of all acceptor ions and all multipole-multipole interactions may be included. The geometric factors are explicitly considered. A feature of the model is that it enables decay rates and the form of decay curves to be p

β¦ Synopsis
Luminescence decay curves from the 4G5,2 state of Sm'+ in the cubic hexachloroelpasolite crystals Cs,NaSm,Y, xCI, (x = 0.005 to x = 1) have been measured in the temperature range lo-300 K. Energy transfer from the 'G5,2 to the 'F, states occurs at all concentrations studied. At intermediate concentrations the decay curves are strongly non-exponential and are interpreted using a recently developed shell model. Extensions of the model which may provide a better description of the data are briefly discussed.
