The reconstruction of household and individual life histories has made it possible to determine the intensity and role of migratory dynamics in the demographic system of Casalguidi, a rural community in 19th century Italy. This article deals with the household component of those migratory processes, trying to clarify the background in which such difficult decisions were made. In particular, the importance of the economy and kin networks is assessed, showing their differential impact according to the social status of the household. The possibility offered by life histories to carry out multivariate longitudinal analyses allows not only for the study of the phenomenon of household migration in much greater detail, but also the strengthening of results pointed out at the descriptive level.
