✦ Synopsis

Seventy-two cases of proven familial multiple polyposis and 8 deduced cases of familial multiple polyposis were detected in a large Kentucky kindred of 1,422 members. The mean age a t onset of symptoms in 41 polyposis patients was 28.9 years, the mean age at diagnosis of polyposis in 72 kindred members was 27.7 years, the mean age at diagnosis of cancer in 30 proven polyposis cases was 38.8 years, and the mean age at cancer diagnosis in 8 deduced polyposis cases was 47.1 years. The comparison of males and females for these age parameters showed no significant difference. I n 49 percent of the patients with proven polyposis who manifested symptoms prior to polyposis diagnosis, cancer was present at the time of polyposis diagnosis or 2 years thereafter. This was in sharp contrast to proven cases without prior symptoms in which only 12 percent were found to have cancer at the time of polyposis diagnosis or 2 years thereafter. These findings indicate the importance of symptoms in planning surgical treatment.
