[Publisher's Note to the First Edition]
"The old language of the Island is Manx Gaelic, and these are the old stories, passed down by word of mouth from the old days to now, when Dora Broome has written them down in English for many more people to read.
On the Island, the gold of gorse comes right down to the sea; the hills are purple with heather, and the banks thick with primroses in spring. Gulls flash in the sunlight and seals bask on the rocks or slip silently into the sea. But in winter, storms lash the coast and the waves leap up in columns of spray, and the cries of the gulls echo on the wind. This is the scene against which the stories are told of the Little Fellows, the Giants, the Phynnodderee and the Bugganes.
Dora Broome is also the author of the Matilda Mouse stories so admirably told in the Children's Hour by Wilfred Pickles.
This is the first appearance of this book in print, and we feel sure it will be warmly welcomed as a fine contribution to fairy tale literature."
