✦ Synopsis
Alar--Ex~rimental data from the spinning to failure of thirty-nine ATJS graphite disks are analyzed. Strains measured at the center of each disk are found to be in good agreement with theoretical stress and strain distributions calculated using a non-linear stress-strain law. The differences between biaxial fracture strains, derived from the disk spin-tests, and fracture strains in uniaxial tension, derived from the spinning to failure of thirty-seven bars of ATJS, provide initial estimates of the effects of biaxial tension on fracture probability. Significance is attached to the fact that most of the fracture origins in the spin tests were very near the surface of the specimen. In the tests of uniaxial bars, an appreciable fraction of fractures occurred at the comers of the cross section. Inferences are drawn as to the relative probabilities of corner-, surface-, and internal-origin fractures. Part II of this paper will carry the analysis further and provide additionai confirmation of the applicability of weakest-link statistics to the fracture of graphite.
