Past efforts of the Nigerian Railway Corporation to produce shoe brake blocks locally have proved unsuccessful; the brake blocks produced are defective, and are highly susceptible to brittle (catastrophic) failure. The objective of this work was to undertake failure analysis of locally produced shoe

β¦ Synopsis
In this study, failed samples of railway brake blocks were analysed to ascertain the causes of failure. Seven samples of varying charge constituents were produced in a permanent mould. Mechanical tests (hardness, compression and impact), spectroscopic analysis and microstructural investigations were carried out on each sample. Multiple linear regression analysis was then used in correlating the composition with the mechanical properties. Analysis shows that two of the test samples have superior mechanical properties to the imported (standard) brake block. Three equations emerged from the analysis which should help the producers and users of railway brake blocks to predict the mechanical properties of the blocks to be cast, thereby overcoming the high incidence of catastrophic failure of the brake blocks.

Previous studies of the Kettleman landfill slope failure of 1988 had concluded that the failure, which slid along the underlying liner interfaces with low shearing resistance, occurred as a result of attaining the critical waste fill height. These studies showed, however, some discrepancies in regar
