✦ Synopsis

The introduction of the nitrogen atom in the sugar molecule, makes these carbohydrate derivatives appropriate for the selective detection by the nitrogen-phosphorus detector, with at least a 10-fold improvement in sensitivity. Thus, the limits of detection of sugars are low; they can further be lowered by on-column injection techniques. The characteristic mass spectra exhibited by the derivatives are very suitable for the GC-MS analysis, introducing a further improvement in sensitive and specific detection. Quantitative analysis and sensitive detection of low amounts of sugars in complex mixtures become thus possible. The present methods are well suited for sensitive gas chromatographic and GC-MS analysis of carbohydrates in biological samples.
