✦ Synopsis

Competitive intelligence that targets China-based companies-whether state or privately owned businesses, joint ventures, or foreign subsidiaries operating in Chinarequires an understanding of China's special business culture and environment. Key factors include the company's type of ownership, the government's involvement in its industry, and location in China. For example, ownership type can determine whether a company receives favored bank loans or benefits from tax-waiving policies. Government control remains greater over companies in some industries compared with others. And location can affect not only taxes and regulation (especially in the many Economic Development Zones), but the level of local protectionism and corruption. These and other factors affect a China-based company's competitiveness.
