✦ Synopsis


The need of some means for the prompt and regular publication of the work of American zoologists has become obvious to every investigator, especially to those in the steadily growing field of experimental and analytical zoology. Much has been accomplished by the broad policy adopted by the Journal of Morphology, the Biological Bulletin, the American Journal of Physiology, the Journal of Anatomy, the American Naturalist, Science and other publications. For the publication of work in general zoology the Journal of Morphology 'has set a standard of excellence second to none, and one that we can hardly hope to equal; yet the want of further facilities for publication is still deeply and increasingly felt. The Biological Bulletin is avowedly intended for articles of a shorter or preliminary character. Neither the Journal of Physiology nor the Journal of Anatomy is primarily intended for the publication of matter belonging to zoology in the wider sense. The Naturalist and Science are addressed rather to general readers than to specialists. American zoologists have, in point of fact, in late years often been compelled to depend on the hospitality of foreign journals or on such American journals as the Journal of Physiology or the Journal of Anatomy, not primarily intended for their use.

The desirability of establishing a new journal, not as a rival, but as a complement to those now existing, has, we believe, become evident; and accordingly we ask cooperation in the foundation of THE JOURNAL OF
