β¦ Synopsis
The concept of a Fabry-Perot etalon has been explicitly applied to the analysis of resonant tunneling structures. We have treated both singleand double-barrier structures with an applied electric field as equivalent Fabry-Perot etalons under the WKB approximation. We obtain resonances in the transmission coefficient for a single quantum barrier. These resonances are explicitly shown to be associated with the round-trip phase of electrons within an equivalent etalon. For the double-barder structure, the transmission coefficient, the quasi-bound states and the full width at half maximum are calculated. Our result is compared to that using the Airy functions and shows a very good agreement.
