## Abstract A general method for the synthesis of metal oxide hollow spheres has been developed by using carbonaceous polysaccharide microspheres prepared from saccharide solution as templates. Hollow spheres of a series of metal oxides (SnO~2~, Al~2~O~3~, Ga~2~O~3~, CoO, NiO, Mn~3~O~4~, Cr~2~O~3~,
