✦ Synopsis
Abstract
For narrower wavelength spacing in order to allow a further increase of communication capacity for optical communications, interleavers are used in addition to wavelength multiplexer/demultiplexers. The wavelength filters for an interleaver are required to have characteristics in which box‐shaped filtering characteristics with a narrow bandwidth appear alternatively and periodically. A ring resonator filter can be made to have a box‐shaped filter characteristic by higher‐order cascading so that the peaks appear periodically in wavelength. By using these properties, an interleaver with fourth‐order parallel ring resonators is proposed. A 1 × 2 interleaver is fabricated for trial by a design that expands the fabrication tolerance by using an improved waveguide pattern. The interleave characteristics of the spectrum are demonstrated. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
