✦ Synopsis
Instructional fables each containing a moral. Book # L43 in Series ’The Penguin Classics Edited By E. V. Rieu’. ************************************* (TRANSLATOR’S) NOTE The most recent Greek text of the fables is that edited, with a French translation, by Emile Chambry (Societe d’Edition ’Les Belles Lettres ’, Paris, 1927), con- taining 358 fables. There is an older text by C. Halm (Teubner), which makes the number up to 426 by including fables from various Greek authors. The present selection includes a few of the latter, and a number translated from the Latin of Phaedrus (text by J. P. Postgate in Oxford Classical Texts, by J. Gow in Postgate’s ’Corpus Poetarum Latinorum’; text with French translation by Alice Brenot (Societe d’Edition ’Les Belles Lettres’, Paris)). ************************************* Scanner’s note: ’The scorpion and the frog’ as usual is missing (’it is in my NATURE to sting...’).
