Kendra y Seth Sorenson son dos hermanos de 13 y 11 años respectivamente a quienes sus padres dejan al cuidado de sus abuelos paternos durante dos semanas y media. Kendra y Seth apenas les conocen, ya que los abuelos Sorenson siempre han sido bastante reservados y apenas salen de su granja de Connecticut. Cuando llegan a la granja, su abuelo les informa que la abuela ha tenido que salir de viaje, pero que la ama de llaves, Lena, cuidará muy bien de ellos. Solo hay dos normas: no adentrarse en el bosque y no entrar en el granero.
Pese al comportamiento gruñón de su abuelo, Kendra y Seth se lo pasan bien en la piscina y jugando con la multitud de juguetes que hay en su cuarto. Kendra encuentra unas llaves minúsculas y decide descubrir qué abre cada una de ellas. Mientras tanto, Seth desobedece al abuelo y se adentra en el bosque, donde conoce a una extraña e intimidante anciana atada a una cuerda. Cosas muy extrañas comienzan a pasar alrededor de la casa, y sólo si Kendra consigue descifrar el misterio de las llaves será digna de descubrir el misterio que envuelve a Fablehaven.
