โœฆ Synopsis

This book, which appears as Volume 30 in the Chemical Analysis series, is an English translation of Professor T61g's excellent Chemische Elementaranalyse mit kleinsten Proben (see Anal. Chim. Acta, 42 (1968) 183). Analytical methods for very small organic samples, developed mainly by the schools of Kirsten, Belcher and T61g himself, are described in detail. The original literature is spread through many journals, and its well-balanced collection in this monograph is very useful. The three years that have intervened since the appearance of the German edition have produced little of real value to the general techniques of organic ultramicro analysis, but the opportunity has been taken to bring the text up to date where necessary.

It is a pleasure to be able to recommend this book unreservedly to non-German readers; the presentation is lucid and is imbued by the author's experience of the difficulties that can arise in this specialized field. The possibilities of ultramicro organic analysis are still largely ignored by organic chemistry and biochemistry, though the methods have proved very valuable in the few cases where they have been utilized. Perhaps this new edition may stimulate wider interest in their application.
