The view that Thomas Garrigue Masaryk, the founder of the Czechoslovak Republic, was a philosopher and indeed, after becoming President, the most unusual embodiment of the Platonic "philosopher-king" is widespread and in many respects fully justified. But the conventional, somewhat narrow interpreta
