In 1839, the University of Durham (founded in 1832) resolved to establish an astronomical observatory. Instruments had become available for purchase from the Rev. T. J. Hussey of Kent, an amateur astronomer. Funds were raised on appeal and the Dean and Chapter made a site available.

Double-stars observed a t the University Observatory, Durham, during the year 18'7H. The observations were made with an Equatoreal of 6 . 3 inches aperture, and a double image niicroniete? af Airy's first construction, bearing powers of 110, 150, 205 and 310 7: Cassiopeiae
