✦ Synopsis

A flare surge at the limb was observed in Cm 977 A by the Harvard OSO 6 spectroheliometer. The kinematic behavior of the surge is the same in CIII and in Ha. The amount of CnI emission is consistent with a model in which the C In ions occupy sheaths with thickness ~ 100 km surrounding the cooler Hc~-emitting threads. The mass of the material containing Cm ions is about 10 -2 times that emitting Hc~.

New theoretical electron temperature sensitive emission line ratios in SilV involving the 3d2D -3p2p and 4s2S -3pZP multiplets at ~ 1125 and 816 h, respectively, are derived using recent R-matrix electron excitation rate calculations. A comparison of these with observational data for a solar active
