β¦ Synopsis
A supported liquid membrane (SLM) system was used to study the carrier-facilitated extraction of trivalent europium ions. The SLM system was cqnstructed with 12.72 cm2 Celgard 2500 of effective surface area in a flat sheet membrane module between feed and strip side stirred cells. PC-88A (2-ethylhexyl hydrogen 2-ethylhexyl phosphate) in kerosene (diluent) and span 80 (surfactant) solution was used as the impregnated carrier to enhance the facilitated extraction of euaopium ions. The experimental data coupled with a mass transfer model analysis demonstrated that, for extraction of dilute Eq3+ feed solution with relatively high concentration of carrier in the liquid membrane, the rate of extraction is controlled by mass transfer resistance in the aqueous phase. However, for the extraction of high concentration feed solutions, the overall extraction rate is controlled by mass transfer resistance in the liquid membrane.
