β¦ Synopsis
A series of experiments have been conducted on the extinguishment of wood crib fires by water applied directly on top of the crib. The effects of crib height, water application rate and the percentage of crib mass consumed before water application have been investigated systematically. A single empirical correlation, for three types of cribs with the same stick size, but different crib height, has been established between the ratio of crib mass consumed during the extinction period vs the fire-consumable material remaining at the beginning of water application, R, and between the ratio of water application rate vs the burning rate at the beginning of water application, &w/th. The ratio R varies as the -1.55 power of the ratio rhw/rh. A single linear relationship exists between the ratio of total water evaporated vs the the total mass consumed during extinguishment, and the ratio of the water application rate vs maximum burning rate of the crib for all three different crib heights. In addition, five tests on 4 ft X 4 ft X 4 ft stacks.of wood pallets have been conducted. The ratio, R, is found to vary as the -1.55 power of the ratio rhw/rh,__ similar to the wood cribs.
