✦ Synopsis

The present study was concerned with the effect of amobarbital on the extinction of unsignaled shuttlebox avoidance, and the effect exerted subsequently by a conditioned fear stimulus (CS~-) on avoidance responding following the extinction of the avoidance response with amobarbital. Rats were given unsignaled shuttlebox avoidance training, then given separate Pavlovian fear conditioning, followed by avoidance extinction sessions under amobarbital with Pavlovian conditioning without drug continuing on alternate days. The CS+ was then presented during two post avoidance extinction tests sessions to determine the effect of the CS+ on the avoidance response extinguished under amobarbital. It was found that 20 mg/kg amobarbital facilitated the extinction of unsignaled shuttlebox avoidance, but failed to block the reaction (i.e., elicitation of avoidance response) to the CS+ in the same setting.
