✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Studies were undertaken to determine the ultrastructure and function of the spiculum copulatus (SC) on the seventh abdominal tergum of adult male Blattella germanica (L.).

The SC is located on the seventh abdominal tergum in between the anterior pair of tergal gland orifices. It is approximately 250 μm long and 40 μm in diameter at the base. It is invested with numerous sensilla, many of which are bifurcate and trifurcate. Cauterization of the SC leads to cessation of certain phases of the male precopulatory behavior (such as extension and arching of the abdomen and clamping of the genitalia), thereby preventing mating. The cauterization studies indicate that the SC and its sensilla possibly serve a mechanoreceptive function.

## Abstract The various sensilla on the antennae and on the labial and maxillary palps of __Blattella germanica__ (L.) were studied. Thick‐walled chemoreceptors with fluted shafts and articulated bases are located on the antennae and on the labial and maxillary palps. Thin‐walled chemoreceptors, wi
