The optimum parameters of multiple tuned mass dampers (MTMD) for suppressing the dynamic response of a base-excited structure in a specific mode is investigated. The base excitation is modelled as a stationary white noise random process. The stationary response of the structure with MTMD is analyzed

โฆ Synopsis
The optimum tuning frequency and damping ratio of a vibration absorber, for which the steady state response of the damped primary system excited by an external force is minimized, were determined by a numerical search procedure. Explicit formulae for these optimum parameters were then derived through a sequence of curve-fitting schemes. The accuracy of these formulae and the influence of the system damping on the optimum parameters are discussed. With the errors in the explicit formulae being negligible, the formulae provide a convenient tool for computing the optimum parameters in engineering applications.
