Especially stable hydrated cluster ions (H20) (NHa)k4NH: have been observed in a mass spectrometer via VUV one-photon and electron-impact ionization of the corresponding neutral binary clusters (H,0),(NH3). produced in a supersonic jet. The results are explained consistently in terms of a completioq of the stable inner solvation shell around the NH: ion, [ (H,O) (NH,),,]NH: and (H,O) [ (NHs),NH:

1, in addition to a characteristic neutral cluster growth.
