Abstract

Optical phase conjugators (OPCs) based on either a dispersion‐shifted fiber (DSF) or a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) have been experimentally compared in terms of electrical carrier‐to‐noise ratios and conversion losses in microwave optical links. The experimental results show that the SOA‐based OPC enables using more efficient electrical modulation formats than the DSF‐based OPC due to less influence of the ASE noise. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
