✦ Synopsis
An electrospray mass spectrometer was specially designed for the measurement of clusters in an electrolyte solution. By the present mass spectrometry, the difference in the degree of ionization between HNO3 and H2SO4 in water could be explained on the basis of the molecular clustering in the solutions; such as delocalization of protons released from HNO3 among all over the water clusters in the solution and localization of protons released from H2SO4 in self-association clusters of H2SO4 molecules. As another distinguished point of this mass spectrometry, the mass spectra for both positive and negative ion clusters could be measured under the same experimental conditions except for positive or negative electric field in the electrospray. A possible ion-pair structure for HNO3 in acetonitrile could be speculated in consideration with positive and negative parts of clusters.
