β¦ Synopsis
In view of the deslgnmg of a cold neutron source for the French-German Htgh Flux Reactor to be budt at Grenoble, France, a study of several cold sources of hqutd hydrogen and hqutd deuterium has been made. By theorebcal study a method of calculating the cold neutron flux gain factor of a cold source was dmcovered, and this was checked by an experimental study m a low power reactor A stgmficant correspondence between calculabons and measurements was obtained.
Thin mvesbgabon proved that an opttmlzed cold neutron source of hqutd hydrogen could be produced, and also that a hqutd deuterium moderator was superior to a hquld hydrogen moderator when D2 ts used m large volumes (about 40 1)
