Oxides of manganese, aluminum, and especially iron are important sorbents for inorganic contaminants. The sorption process can be characterized by two steps. The first step is a rapid, reversible reaction between the bulk aqueous phase and external surfaces. The slow, second step is the rate limitin

✦ Synopsis
The authors recently discovered an error in the calculations of the estimated activation energies (E A ) for strontium and cadmium adsorption to hydrous ferric oxide (HFO). On page 446, they presented the following in Table 2: for Sr ␣ ϭ 0.88 and E A ϭ 8.7 kcal/mol, and for Cd ␣ ϭ 0.5 and E A ϭ 10.7 kcal/mol. However, these values were calculated incorrectly; the correct values are for Sr ␣ ϭ 1.3 and E A ϭ 12.9 kcal/mol, and for Cd ␣ ϭ 0.7 and E A ϭ 15.0 kcal/mol.
