A two-prey, one-predator model incorporating nonlinear functional response is investigated analytically as well as numerically. The system appears to exhibit chaos for a range of parametric values when long time behavior studied.

β¦ Synopsis
A single-degree-of-freedom system with both a linear and a cubic non-linear spring term is examined. The system is shown to exhibit periodic and chaotic motions. The existence of chaos is discussed and possible qualitative explanations for the chaos are examined. It is shown that multiple static equilibria are not a necessary requirement for chaos to occur. Some introductory tutorial material is included in the presentation to assist engineering readers who may be unfamiliar with the subject.
