✦ Synopsis

We present a full analysis of exciton dynamics in a GaAs Ξ»/2 bulk microcavity following excitation by ultrafast laser pulses. Coherent dynamics was probed by means of an interferometric technique; beating and dephasing times were studied for various excitation intensities. At high incident power, population effects begin to show up reducing exciton oscillator strength and suppressing Rabi splitting. This feature produces marked non-linearities in the input-output characteristic of the optical functions, which were studied in view of reaching bistable operation. Theoretical calculations performed within the transfer-matrix framework show good agreement with experimental results.

By exciting resonantly a microcavity with a pulsed laser beam, we have observed the in-plane propagation of excitonic cavity polaritons on distances much greater than the wavelength. The spin dynamics of cavity polaritons, in the non-linear regime, present a novel and striking behaviour of the degree of polarization of photoluminescence. It reaches its maximum value at a finite time after excitation with a light pulse, and is strongly influenced by the exciton-cavity detuning. I

Low-temperature time-resolved luminescence experiments with picosecond resolution have been performed on excitons in a microcavity containing InGaAs quantum wells. The decay curves are very dependent on the energy difference between the cavity mode and the exciton. They agree qualitatively with a mo
