✦ Synopsis
Keceived 22 August I988
The fluorescence lifetime of bifluorene was found to be 240 times shorter than that of fluorene and it is viscosity dependent in alkane and alcohol solvents. The lifetime is also temperature dependent with Arrhenius energies in the range 3.5 to 4.2 kcal/mol, suggesting that a barrier crossing process is occurring in the excited state. The viscosity data do not fit a Kramcrs equation with hydrodynamic variables. The barrier crossing rates in alkanes increase slightly with increasing viscosity at the lower viscosities.
