The electronic spedm of a merocyanine dye in a polar &vent have been studied at different temperatures. Absence of excitation wavelength dependence at room temperature in a fluid medium isdue to orientational and translational relaxation of the "solvent-cage". For the rigid solution, Uetimesof various "solute-sokent conformations" arc brger than the excited-$&e lifetime; hence e~ci~tion.wavele~th dependent fluorescence occurs.
