β¦ Synopsis
Abstract
Proton magnetic resonance has shown that there is exchange between the outerβ and the bridgeβalkylgroups in dimeric triethyl aluminium at room temperature. At lower temperatures the rate of exchange diminishes, and at β60Β° exchange is hardly noticeable.
In diethyl aluminium chloride no exchange of alkylgroups was found between room temperature and β60Β°. The observation fits in well with the concept of chlorine bridges in the dimer.
In a 1:1 mixture of both compounds exchange of alkylgroups was observed at room temperature. Lowering of the temperature first stops the exchange between the alkylgroups of the two different compounds and then also stops the exchange between the alkylgroups in the triethyl aluminium.
In a 1:1 mixture of methyl aluminium dichloride and dimethyl aluminium chloride it was also found that upon a lowering of the temperature the exchange between alkylgroups stops.
