In the paper we present the following results: i exact wavefunctions are found for a system described by a quadratic Ž .

Ž . Hamiltonian of the most general form; ii an exact quantum propagator is constructed for the above-mentioned system; iii the method used in the paper turns out to be essentially simpler for treating time-dependent systems than the traditionally exploited generalized Lewis-Riesenfeld technique.
